Finding My Flow: How Dance Keeps Me Sane
Over the years, I've come to realise that dance is the only form of exercise that truly allows me to release my emotions. Running, yoga, strength training – they all have their benefits, of course. But none of them quite compare to the cathartic experience of moving my body to music.
It's become so clear to me that dancing is essential for my well-being. It's like a magical release valve for all the pent-up energy and emotions I'm carrying around.
To combat "off" days, I gently remind myself to move. And guess what? It WORKS! Every single time.
Here's my go-to dance therapy routine:
Start with the feels: I begin with some gentle or moody music that truly reflects the emotions I'm experiencing.
Shake it off: Next, I crank up the intensity! I let loose and really move those emotions out. Think powerful, driving beats.
Lighten the mood: Finally, I end with some upbeat, playful music to remind myself to hold it all lightly.
This mini-dance party usually lasts between 15 minutes and an hour, but even a quick 5-minute dance break can make a world of difference.
Dance Anytime, Anywhere:
Make space for movement: No need for a dedicated studio! Dance in your living room, in your garden, even in your kitchen.
Dance through all emotions: Don't just dance when you're happy. Dance when you're sad, angry, frustrated, or even just feeling blah.
Experiment with music: Explore different genres and artists. You might be surprised at how certain rhythms and melodies move you.
So, I challenge you to find your own dance flow. Let movement be your medicine. You might be surprised at how much better you feel!
